Large PDF Analysis
How NowToPrint handles fast triage, sampled preflight, and deeper verification for large PDF files.
For a long or complex PDF, read the report's actual analysis scope before using its result. Page count and file size alone do not show which pages or checks were fully inspected.
Large-file policy and document limits
The analysis policy classifies reported page counts above 120 or reported sizes above 45 MB as sampled-large-file scope; explicit sampling context can also set that scope. These policy thresholds are not upload limits and do not prove that a particular runtime completed a sample, a complete pass or any later background analysis.
Browser admission is separately limited to 200 MB and 500 pages per document. MB uses 1024 × 1024 bytes. A PDF below those limits can still exceed object, decoded-stream, image, memory or time budgets. A larger-file policy label does not bypass these limits.
What to read in the report
| Field or disclosure | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Scope | Distinguish quick, full-engine, sampled and independently supported analysis. A full-engine label does not override skipped checks. |
| Sampled and total page counts | Establish the coverage actually reported; an absent sample count is not proof all pages ran. |
| Sampling coverage | Applies only when supplied or derivable from valid counts. Do not invent a percentage. |
| Skipped or undecided checks | Keep residual risk visible; a skipped rule is not a pass. |
| Evidence level | Parser, render and independent-validator evidence have different limits. Rendered pixels are not certified press proof. |
| Limitations | Read unsupported measurements, heuristic ink/colour signals and any missing independent evidence. |
A deterministic sample plan can make a particular analysis repeatable. It cannot make uninspected pages safe, nor establish that a different runtime used the same plan. The report and execution evidence must describe the pages actually checked.
When broader inspection is needed
For a high print run, costly book/catalogue, uncertain fonts or bleed, or a proof/dispute requirement, ask the printer for an inspection that covers those risks and identify the exact PDF version. Availability of a deeper pass depends on the chosen engine and workflow; the tool does not promise that a background pass will start or finish automatically.
If the run fails or reaches a limit, keep that result visible. Simplify or split the source only when appropriate to the job, then inspect the resulting files again. A successful preview or a low risk estimate cannot stand in for missing checks.
The original PDF stays unchanged during analysis. Colour conversion, transparency flattening, trapping and font conversion remain separate source/specialist decisions.
