Desktop App and Hot Folders
Where the Edge Hub desktop app stands today, what a hot folder does and what it does not do yet. Setup details are in the Edge Hub section.
Desktop App and Hot Folders
The desktop app (Edge Hub) runs on the print shop's own Windows computer. PDF checks happen on that computer and the file is not uploaded to the cloud. This page describes honestly where the app stands today; for setup, pairing and troubleshooting see the Edge Hub section.
Not public: an invited pilot
Edge Hub is not open for public download. It is currently in a controlled pilot with invited print shops, on Windows 10/11 (64-bit) only. There is no macOS or Linux version. You get the package from the pilot team.
What is in the pilot?
- Local PDF checks. The file does not leave your computer.
- Pairing. The app shows a one-time code; you approve the code in the dashboard under My print shop → Settings → Equipment → Pair Edge Hub. The code is valid for 10 minutes; approve it in that time and keep the app open and online until pairing is complete.
- Installation. Because the signing process is still going on, Windows SmartScreen may show a warning; updates are delivered by hand for now.
What does a hot folder do?
A hot folder notices PDFs that land in a folder you choose. It does not pick up a file until the file size has settled; a half-copied file is never processed. It lists the files it notices in the app.
The hot folder is part of the pilot's trial scope. In your version the buttons to start and stop folder watching may not be enabled; the pilot team tells you what is enabled in your version. There is no guarantee that it will work in the field, and it may change with the trial results.
What is not offered yet
- Unattended workflows. Processing a file that lands in the folder with a pre-approved template and sending it to the machine on its own is not offered to users today.
- Public download, macOS, Linux.
- Unsupported devices. HP, Canon, Ricoh, SCREEN, Konica Minolta, Xerox and Heidelberg are not supported. We do not promise a fixed efficiency percentage.
What the app does not change
It does not overwrite the source PDF; the output is a separate file. It does not convert colours, does not flatten transparency and does not invent missing content. It does not count something it could not measure as passed.
Doing the same in the browser
Without the desktop app you can still check your files in the browser for free and impose them. The app is for jobs where the software has to talk to the print shop's machines and folders.
