Working in Studio for the First Time

PDF Studio checks the file, repairs, imposes and records the output in a six-step flow. Learn what Studio changes, what it leaves to the program the file was made in, and how the original file stays protected.

Working in Studio for the First Time

PDF Studio brings the file, the check, the fixes, the imposition and the record of the output into one workspace. You move to Studio when the quick single-page tools are not enough for a job.

Getting started

When you open Studio you see one big action: Upload PDF (or drag and drop the file). The other panels stay out of your way until there is a valid PDF. The file opens in your browser and can be at most 200 MB. Renamed files, empty files and files with a fake header are refused with a clear message, and the file you already have open is not deleted.

Six steps

The strip at the top shows where the job is:

StepWhat you do
FileUpload the PDF and look at its pages and file summary.
CheckRun the preflight and see the findings on the page.
RepairApply page-level fixes and the fixes you choose. Repair has two tabs: Suggested repairs (offered from findings) and Page editing (rotate, reorder, delete, insert blank, split).
ImposeLay pages out on the press sheet (first imposition).
OutputDownload the prepared PDF, imposed PDF, project file, HTML report or XJDF work order, and see the output's digest (SHA-256) and its limitations.
SendCreate a quote request (or add to an existing one) with the file and check results, or create a read-only share link (members only). Direct delivery to one print shop is not available yet.

If the information a step needs is not there yet, the step appears locked. On a phone the panels start closed; you open one by tapping its button.

Studio does not change your design

Studio does not change your design. Every fix Studio offers is one you start yourself, keeps your original file, and is listed in the receipt. Studio can: set or normalise the page geometry (trim and bleed), crop or scale pages, generate bleed, hide content outside the page or bleed area (nothing is deleted), add page numbers, and add a watermark. Studio does not change line widths or text colour, convert colours, flatten transparency, change fonts, trap, or add an output intent. Fix those in the program the file was made in.

Which fixes are offered can change from release to release; for a fix that is not offered, Studio points you back to the program the file was made in.

What Studio does not touch

There is no colour conversion, no transparency flattening, no font conversion or embedding, no trapping and no adding of an output intent; those are left to the RIP. Rotating, cropping, scaling, deleting/adding/reordering pages and adding bleed are page operations that do not damage the file's content, and they are part of the toolset.

Ink heat map

In the page viewer, the overlay menu has Show ink heat map. It is off by default. It colours the page by total ink (TAC). The legend shows:

  • the scale, the limit and the profile it comes from;
  • the highest measured total ink on the page;
  • how many areas are over the limit (bold dotted outline) or could not be measured (hatched).

Areas it cannot measure (for example RGB, Lab, indexed, pattern or special colours, gradients, unreadable or masked images, overprint, blend modes) are hatched and never counted as fine. Each value is the highest of any single object touching the area; overprint and transparency are not composited. It is not drawn on imposed sheets. The layer changes nothing in the file. It needs the current engine version; with an older one Studio says the ink could not be measured.

Active content is always cleaned

JavaScript, launch and form-submit actions, embedded files and XFA are always removed from the edited copy; you do not choose this. Removal really is removal: the content does not remain in the output. If it cannot be cleaned, Studio refuses the operation. The cleaned file still stays in Review, and your original file is kept.

Proving and comparing the output

The Output step shows the output's digest (SHA-256) and its limitations. A preview is not a press proof; no screen replaces a final production approval. After a repair Studio re-runs the check and shows which findings were fixed, which remain and which are new. The Compare view puts the original, prepared and imposed pages side by side; it is a preview, not a press proof.

Keyboard and touch

All editing and imposition actions can also be done with visible buttons, without dragging. When a panel opens, focus moves into it; Escape closes a compact panel. On narrow screens, buttons offer a touch target of at least 44 × 44 px.
