PDF Tools: Where to Start
Preflight, imposition, Studio and workflows: what each tool does, what to do in your first 5 minutes, and the three rules that apply to every tool.
PDF Tools: Where to Start
The PDF tools measure your file before it goes to print, edit its pages when needed, and impose it onto sheets. Most work happens in your browser: your file does not leave your device, no account is needed, and it is free.
What do you want to do?
Is my file ready for print?
Preflight: drop in a PDF and see what was measured and what could not be.
How do I read the result?
What Ready, Review and Could not be evaluated mean. RGB, small text in more than one ink and bleed.
I want to lay pages out on a sheet
Imposition: saddle-stitch booklet, signature book and N-up.
I want to fix or edit pages
Studio: file, check, repair, impose and output in one workspace.
I repeat the same job again and again
Components, templates and workflows: set up a repeating job once.
Limits and privacy
What is free, file size limits, and where your file stays.
Three rules that apply to every tool
- Your original file is always kept. If a tool changes your file, it hands you the result as a new file; the file you uploaded stays exactly as it was.
- We never show something we could not measure as "passed". If a check could not be done on this file, the result is Could not be evaluated, and the report does not hide it.
- We never touch the inside of your file silently. We do not convert colours, flatten transparency, convert or embed fonts, or generate trapping; that is the RIP's job. We do perform page operations such as rotating, cropping, scaling, adding bleed and imposition, but every change is recorded in the report, and apart from removing active content (always done on the copy) every change is your choice.
Your first 5 minutes
- Open the preflight tool and drop in a PDF you have at hand (detailed steps).
- Read the result line. If it is not Ready, find out why from the findings (guide to reading results).
- If the file is a booklet, a book or a multi-up job, move on to imposition (first imposition).
- If something needs fixing, open the file in Studio (Studio guide).

These tools do not give print approval
The tools' report is a diagnostic report, not a print approval. Your print shop's own preflight has the final say. The report exists so that you can tell your print shop "we measured the file in these ways and could not measure these things".
