Workspace (Canvas) Rules
How to use Safe Zone and layer features in the NowToPrint Design Studio to produce flawless print-ready work.
Workspace (Canvas) and Honest Design Rules
The NowToPrint web-based Design Studio brings the power of professional desktop software (such as Illustrator) directly to your browser. But beyond a polished interface, the true purpose of this studio is to ensure you produce work that is 100% print-ready and won't end up as waste at the print shop.
Here we will explain not just the tools, but also — honestly — what costly mistakes (in time and money) you may face if you use them incorrectly.
The 3-Layer Safety Armour (Artboard – Trim – Bleed)
When you enter the design studio you see a white page (Canvas), but behind the scenes three invisible boundaries protect you:
Critical Warning: "Can I Place My Logo at the Edge?"
70% of our customers think their design looks great with the logo snapped right to the outermost corner of the page. However, when enormous guillotine blades cut 500 sheets simultaneously, millimetre-level shifts occur.
Risk of Trimming (Protect Yourself)
If you place a logo, phone number, or any important text outside the BLUE dashed lines (Safe Zone) on the canvas, when the paper is cut by the machine that text or logo can fall exactly on the blade and be sliced off. Your products will become unreadable. All text must remain inside the blue line (Safe Zone).
Background Colour: "Why Should I Extend to the Red Line?"
The opposite applies to backgrounds. Extend your background colour or photograph all the way to the RED line (Bleed) on the canvas. If you stop at the black (Trim) line instead, when the blade shifts outward ugly white paper margins will appear at the edges of your product.
The Logic of the Interface: Left Brain and Right Brain
The Design Studio positions its menus to work like the two hemispheres of the brain:
Left Panel: Creation (Adding)
This is where you call new objects (Text, Geometric Shape, Image, Barcode, or Template) onto the white page (Create/Add). You add an element using the left panel.
Right Panel: Manipulation (Editing)
When you click on text that already exists on the page, the Right Panel comes to life. What colour should this text be? What font? Should its opacity increase or decrease? You always activate the right panel by clicking on an object directly on the Canvas.
What If My Browser Crashes?
With a web-based editor, your biggest fears are losing your internet connection, your computer shutting down, or Google Chrome crashing unexpectedly. "Has all my work been lost?"
Your Work Is Safe Every 5 Seconds
Even without you noticing, the moment you move an object even 1 millimetre in the design studio, NowToPrint servers save it "Automatically" to the Cloud database. Even if your device were to catch fire, the moment you log back in you will find your design exactly where you left it, pixel-perfect.
Version History (Time Machine)
If you have heavily modified a design and think "yesterday's version was better", go to File → Version History and travel back minutes or even days to restore the canvas as it was at that exact moment.
